John merkte bij het vorige onderwerp opgemerkt dat er verleden jaar een paar zendmasten zijn geplaatst in Pigadia. Om het onderwerp van Marilou niet te vervuilen heb ik er een apart onderwerp van gemaakt.
Een jaar geleden zendmasten geplaatst? Na de zomer moet het dus bekend zijn of het werkt. En mensen werkt de wifi overal in Pigadia.
Mijn laatste keer Karpathos dateert alweer uit augustus 2008, maar toen had Zephyros Village al WiFi.
Met je laptop op het zwembadterras of vanaf je balkon. Wel lastig dat (toentertijd) een beeldscherm van een laptop wat moeilijk leesbaar was door de zon. Misschien is dat ‘verbeterd’ de laatste jaren.
Ik vind het niet zo belangrijk of er WiFi is of een andere mogelijkheid om het wereldwijde web te bezoeken.
Vakantie betekent voor mij dat ik er geen agenda op na hou, geen internet, geen krant en beperkt mobiele telefonie (We maken van thuisblijvers geen spoorzoekers 
) nodig heb. Even een paar weken geheel terug geworpen worden op jezelf en ‘onbereikbaar’ voor de rest van de wereld. (tu)

Free wireless internet for Pigadia Karpathos

In its efforts to have everyone connected and informed to the demands of today's world, the Municipality of Karpathos council has approved a €45,000 project to install free internet WI-FI. This will be available to residents and visitors of the Pigadia area. The cost of the project will be funded 80% by a European Union program and 20% by the Greek Government. The server will be installed in the Municipality of Karpathos building in Pigadia. Users will be able to obtain speed comparable to the rest of the European Union.

I have been trying to connect to the free wireless internet that the City of Karpathos offers in Pigadia and I have been unable to for the last 4 days. After contacting the City of Karpathos, I have been told that three omnidirectional 12db antennas have been placed for the coverage in Pigadia. One is located in the City Hall, the second at the Eparxeio and the third at some other location.
I was at Sunrise hotel, which is located about 150 meters from the City Hall and 75 meters from the Eparxeio and I was not able to connect to the signal. I was receiving all the other WiFi signals from the other wireless routers, at full strength, but for the City of Karpathos, only 1 bar.
After looking at the antenna location, I realized that they were placed too low. They have to be raised at least two meters off the roof of the buildings. The roof is blocking the signal. I had installed a 15 db antenna in Pigadia and people from Othos were receiving the signal!
After doing a little research, I found out that omnidirectional antennas at 12 db could theoretically travel for miles, something is wrong with either the equipment that was used or the installation was not done properly!!! We have paid 45,000 Euros for this project!!!
